Interview With A Tornado
81Written by Chelsea Roy
I gave my daughter, Chelsea, a science project this week. She was to write an article on something interesting. She chose tornadoes. I liked it enough I thought I would share with you all.
I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. My child is a nut!
Hi. I’m Chelsea, and that tornado up there is Sparky, we’re here at the Instatoot of Young Learning to tell you all about tornadoes, and what you should do if one ever happens to stop in. So we’ll jump right into the Q and A…you in the back, do you have a question?...the bathroom’s down the hall on the left…anyone else have a question?
"How fast do tornadoes go?"
That’s a good question Joe. The average tornado travels 40-100 mph, though some tornadoes can travel over 250 mph…that’s fast enough to knock down Harry Manboobs!
"What makes a tornado?"
Well Sally, tornadoes are rapidly spinning (duh) funnels of…air. They come out of thunderstorms, usually with hail. They occur more in the afternoon, because that’s when more thunderstorms occur, and tornadoes come more often in spring and summer.
"What do I do if the tornado siren sounds?"
Excellent question Timmy! Sparky, why don’t you tell everyone what they should do?
1. Do not run around in circles screaming
2. Hide in your basement (or in Timmy’s case in the well)
3. If you don’t have a basement, go to friend/relatives’ house with a basement. (or a well)
4. If you have no friends/relatives that live walking distance from you, hide in your bathroom.
5. If you live in a trailer, hide outside in a ditch
6. If you have no ditch….run around in circles screaming.
"What if I don’t live near a tornado siren?"
Well little Jimmy…
You’re dead
"Why should I learn about tornadoes?"
Well since you missed most of this Mr. Ivegoddagotodabathroom…
Because the more you know, the less you DIE.
And here are some interesting side facts:
The actual tornado is invisible; it becomes visible when it picks up dust/ debris or when water droplets from the surrounding storm condense.
A tornado traveling on water is called a waterspout, waterspouts don’t suck water up, the blueness of them is actually condensation.
Fire tornadoes (also called fire whirls and fire devils) rise up from the ground, unlike a regular tornado, which comes out of the sky, fire tornadoes are usually formed in wildfires, when a warm updraft converges with the surrounding fire, they can top 160mph, they can be anywhere from 32 to 164 feet tall, and they can uproot trees up to 49 feet tall.
One in 1923, Japan, killed over 38,000 people in just fifteen minutes. THAT’S what I call a Hellstorm. Now, do you run uphill from the fire, or to the basement from the tornado?
Well, I hope you enjoyed my and Sparky’s talk about Tornadoes, here's a picture of Sparky in action!
These are my sources, in case you want to see more about fire tornadoes or waterspouts!

and here are a coulple cool videos for you to enjoy!
I included all the tornados metioned above, except sparky.
FIRE TORNADO! I guess this person couldn't decide whether or not to go uphill or in the basment, so they just video taped it!
That thing must have literally scared the crap out of those people.
Okay...those are BIG tornadoes

Fabulous...and why am I not surprised that your daughter is a nut...they never fall too far from the tree, you know! Great hub!
Super cool! Looks like your daughter has inherited your writing talent! Great job!
I keep waiting for one of these to come along and whisk me off to never never land or is it OZ. I never can remember those kids stories, but this one I'll remember. I promise...Now where did I put that basement?
Thanks
Chuck
Whew, this Hub left me winded,Sueroy.Tell Chelsea she blew me over with this piece.;)
Chelsea, good job on the writing, nice blend of fun and facts, and you get all the points available for title, illustrations and sources.
Extra points for making sense when your mom doesn't!
Only suggestion to make it over the top better, would be to add a video clip.
Earns an A from me,
Chris
Your Hubprincipal...
"The more you know the less you die!" LOVE IT!
Chelsea gets an A from me... a 4th grade teacher. :)
Like mother, like daughter! Well done, Chelsea! :)
My sentiments are merely echos of what the other hubbers said! A's I read I was thinking your daughter has your gift and talent! Woo hoo for her! She will have a wonderful life then.
I loved the writing - hilarious content Chelsea! Especially the part where you say if you have no ditch run around in circles screaming! A+ and LOL!
Your daughter takes after her Mum without a doubt. You must be very proud of your talented daughter.
Take care
Eiddwen.
See mom,
The videos are just awesome,
When you have the chance to go over the top, good enough doesn't cut it!
A+, and a ton of extra credit points for Ms. Chelsea for excellent thematic use of all available media.

Oh no! not the dreaded MATH hub! Cut the crap SueRoy and let her do more weather hubs. Math is for people who can't spell.
Sue,
Serious head on for a second, some 'making math easy' hubs would be awesome, especially if writen by a creative child...
The fractions just fell to pieces
Where is x, and why do we care?
Negative numbers, math downers...
Just saying...

Chelsea may be a 'nut' but she is a very talented one, Sue. Delighted to see that the interview style works well for her, too.
Good job, Chelsea. You should join HubPages (if you are old enough to). If Math is for people who can't spell, then I guess creative writing (my best subject in school) is for people who can't add?
Does Chelsea intimidate her teachers? I know they don't like for the kids to be smarter than they are.
I think Chesea is awesome and bound for stardom. With a sense of humor at her age - it's just cool. My 11 year old just finished her first poetry assignment. I thought about posting them too because I think it is so neat. She loves to express herself through written word and I couldn't be prouder!
Let us see more from Chelsea! Tell her thanks for making this RealHousewife smile and laugh! There's a gift!
I am a REAL HO! Of course I am nice:). Ha! I didn't know you home schooled! So awesome! I have seriously considered it - I fear that i am not able to teach them as well. My middle girl is very shy and quiet. Very, very smart. She has some issues with feeling like she doesn't fit in. I have been to counselor's with her, and I volunteer at school 2 days a week just because I feel that she needs me to be close to her in her school activities. You know - she needs me to be really involved? I don't interfere with her class at all, I work in the office. But she knows I am there and I know everyone:). It's my best compromise but now I am admiring you so much for that too!
Chelsea - I'll bet your one of a kind. Unique. Very, very cool.
I'm going to put Sydney's poetry on my hub tonight! You have inspired me to do this too! Chelsea watch out for it:). I'd like to hear what YOU think!
Well I am sorry to learn that Chelsea is sick:-(. I hope so much that she is on the mend!
Yes, I wouldn't consider homeschooling at all with the other two (Madison & Laurel) they're nick names are: Mad Dog, Syd Vicious and Lil Lulu (she's a tiny 5'2 at 22 yrs old;). But Sydney is special, she is so, oh I can't explain it, deep and thoughtful. An observer like me! So far, she's doing great but each year has gotten better. She has always been A honor roll:)
I'm off on my brrom to pick them up now! Haha!
Oh Sue and Chelsea - I am truly sorry. But you have so much going for you - I can feel it in spirit. That is part of what is so endearing about you:). I could tell that you were a REAL mom too Sue. I love that and think it's really an incredible job and for those of us that find all the wonderful things in it - are the lucky ones. You get amazinger and amazinger! I'm so grateful to have found you two:-)!
I do use it occasionally! It is just a little bulkier for the flying!
Sydney was so excited to read this hub - I wrote one about tornadoes also and in it, I explain how Sydney is really interested in tornadoes. So, she watched the videos and LOL! She loved Harry Manboobs and the (duh) comment. Then she was belly laughing about tip #1 and the rest of the way through!
She is so excited that she rewrote her poems (she turned in the homework:( but she memorized them all! She wants to be a writer like Chelsea so I am going to follow your lead.
Me too! I'm typing them right now! She's picked out a photo so she can introduce herself proper like:-) lol!
This is so totally awesome. I am slow because I'm still trying to figure out how to link them!
Haha! Sydney typed her part and I put her rear in bed. I'm off just to add her photo now:). This has been so fun for us! Thank you for thinking of this!
HO HO HO gotta go gotta go! Chuckle chuckle
sueroy333 - Howdy !
I enjoyed your tornado article and learned some new stuff about those fire tornados. Ouch.
Check out Jerry Zalfas' "almost tornado." We had fun with that one back in the early 1950s. http://hubpages.com/t/cedc3
Gus :-)))
SueRoy, RealHo, Chelsea, and Syndey. This is going to be a foursome to ENJOY! 2 Cool!
Party Down Austinstar! These kids are pretty smart!! Sydney loved typing her HUB!
We just got home now and she is going through the ultra sweet and cool comments! She is having such a great day today!
Sydney is very serious but she has a wicked sense of humor! She is also so excited about having a new friend! Thank you Chelsea:)
Oh gosh, you should have seen how much Syd liked Chelsea's photos! One of a kind and what a gorgeous face you have Chelsea. I think my hair color is the exact shade as yours! So way pretty:) lol!
This was so great. I thought I have wrote the same topic with you on my latest hub. I talk about "fire tornado phenomenon". I hope we can exchange useful information like this one. God bless you. Rated up!
Prasetio
I thought so too! And please tell Chelsea that Mad Dog begged to friend her too:) Now she is going to find out what it is like to have a naggy little sister that always wants to BUTT into her business:) Way cool!
Side bar: are you going to participate in the contest to write every day for April? Hmm? Are you?
I feel exactly the same, I am not ready for a big contest yet but I'm excited about it! I can't wait to see what others come up with. It stresses me out to have deadlines:)!
I love deadlines! I am so weird.
I can understand that too - deadlines keep us organized but not where my writing is concerned. I haven't developed a good pace yet, but in other areas, I do prefer deadlines. In my REAL work - we live by them. I get 72 hours to return junk, so we even pin it to an hour. That's cool though because I know what I'm doing with all that.
And you aren't weird - your a genius! Dang!
Were you the middle child perchance Sue?
And big OOOOoooohhhh, I didn't know you wrote for a newspaper. Quadruple cool! That explains a lot. I must have missed that hub.
You have just said it well again, Sue - ditto what you said above:)
Oh, you two! I'm flattered, yet oddly encouraged to do better. So much to do, so little time.
Tell Chelsea that being diabetic is very much like being in a tornado! Up and down. Being crazy doesn't help things. Being smart definitely doesn't help things.
Why couldn't I have been born rich? It's all I ever asked for. Is it so much, really, to be the heir of the Hiltons? or the daughter of the Queen of England? Ha!
But Noooooo, I have to have been born in Texas! Well, that's almost as good, LOL
It is like Heaven there - my friend since childhood wants to move to Austin! She says it is the nicest area and she lived outside of Galveston. I told her you said it was all full Austinstar and that firecracker told me that she would like you to ask someone to move out:). She wants in! Lol!
I am glad you have been encouraged - that is why you both are in the upper echelon of the hubbers:).
I agree - diabetes is a challenge, I only had gestational and controlled it with a very nasty diet. I thought I was in Hell when they said "no chocolate!"
Yea, like I'm not going to eat chocolate! In your face, diabetes!
Well, they actually recommend that 70% cocoa now for diabetics. Apparently, cocoa is actually good for you! I like the sugar free Dove bites! Yummmm-eee.
I was at whole foods the other day, they now are pushing RAW chocolate. They say it has lots of anti oxidants and is GOOD for you! I didn't taste it though and I meant to try some. I bet it isn't sweet though.
Research? You mean these things are supposed to be real? Lol! Oh good a Daily Wierd! I can't wait to see what you have done.
Laundry, dinner - ick! I did a bit of both today, a 3 ingredient dinner - spaghetti noodles, butter (I skimmed the fat) and mizithra cheese. 523 calories per serving and the kids love it:)! Yum!
Excellent hub! Voted up, useful, and funny! Thanks for sharing! :)
Oh sueroy! I wish I could make you and your family a big batch:). I think it would be cold by the time I arrived!
Real, how do you skim the fat from butter? I thought it was all fat!
I need a good recipe for meatballs. Something Italian with cheese in it. Parmesan?
Austinstar - I put the butter in a pan, heat it and while it browns I skim all the foam off until it is almost a nutty brown, but it burns easily if you don't skim and watch! Of course, there is still fat in it - darn!
I have two great meatball recipes - Sweet Balls of Fire and regular with yep - parmesan! I will email them to you. Also, I bake my meatballs, it is much easier and better for you.
I can see that your daughter has inherited her mother's humor. I love her presentation. Tell her she did an awesome job. :)
Very fun and interesting hub, Chelsea!
